"Top model" cows for research

The cow may be a relevant model for the study of human genetic disorders. This is the conclusion drawn by an international team led by the INRA in partnership with ALLICE, the CEA and VetAgroSup for France - published in the journal Scientific Reports. In cattle, the study of the mutations responsable for rare syndromes, which are also observed in men, provide an interesting alternative to laboratory animals to confirm the genetic origin of these diseases and determine the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Our GWAS revealed that equine performance during endurance races is a complex polygenic trait, and is partially governed by at least five QTL

Endurance horses are able to run at more than 20 km/h for 160 km (in bouts of 30 to 40 km). This level of performance is based on intense aerobic metabolism, effective body heat dissipation and the ability to endure long exercise.

Bovine legacy in Mongolian yak genomes

Could the hardiness of the stubborn yak be combined with the productivity and docility of cattle to produce valuable food, primary products and services in a harsh and hostile environment? Researchers from INRA and ALLICE (France), LMU Munich (Germany) and their partners have compared the architecture of cattle and yak genomes and discovered a millennia old introgression of bovine genes in Mongolian yak, which most probably helped to domesticate and breed these animals.

Launching of the IMAGE European Project

The IMAGE project which stands for “Innovative Management of Genetic resources” is made up of 28 partners including four extra European institutions. Its main objective is to improve quality and to give added socio-economic value to the genetic resources conserved by cryobanks and biological resource centers for livestock. It is based on genomics and bioinformatics in order to obtain better characterizations of the resources and to rationalize their conservation.
