The joint research unit Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology

The GABI Joint Research Unit (UMR) conducts research on the genetics of farm animals that spans a continuum from knowledge acquisition to applied research that helps address the economic, environmental, and societal challenges of livestock farming. To this end, GABI employs integrative, multi-scale approaches—in vivo, in vitro, and in silico—ranging from the cellular to the population level, including the holobiont, across diverse and dynamic systems.

We are addressing two scientific challenges:

  • Envisioning the animals of tomorrow for a variety of environments: animals with a lower environmental impact, better adapted, healthier, and whose well-being is respected.
  • Leveraging integrative biology to understand and predict, moving from genotypes to phenotypes.

To this end, we place genetics, genetic diversity, functional genomics, and data science at the heart of our project—fields that today cut across all our research questions.

The UMR GABI is organized into six research teams and a “Platforms” team.
