GENOSANTE Press Release

GENOSANTE : Improving the productive health of dairy cattle with genetics and counseling

For the first time, actors of the dairy industry have joined forces to develop the indexes and accompany farmers favoring the productive health of dairy cattle.

GÉNOSANTÉ: The first results of this three-year project

The release of an "Acetonomia" index and a "Health" index will be available for breeders of the Prim'Holstein, Pie Rouge and Normandy breeds as of August 2016.

Within a framework of farming sustainability and the end of milk quotas, the traits pertaining to dairy cattle health have become a major stake for economic competitivity, animal welfare, reduction of medicine consumption (notably antibiotics) and the impact of quality of dairy products.

However, in France, only clinical mastitis resistance has been considered directly in selection of dairy cattle breeds. For the other diseases, selection only leads to indirect criteria. These new indexes are therefore an important progress towards an improved management of these genetic and social challenges.
