The Functional Annotation of Animal Genomics Project (FAANG)

The Functional Annotation of ANimal Genomics Project (FAANG) is a coordinated international action with the following main objective: to establish multi-tissue reference catalogues on a limited number of individuals.

Similar to ENCODE projects in human and model species, core assays include

  • RNAseq to study transcribed loci, DNAse-seq or ATAC-seq to study chromatin accessibility and architecture and histone marks;
  • additional assays include chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) and DNA methylation profiling.

Over 130 scientists are FAANG members and include 14 colleagues from INRA (five from GABI)

Currently, three pilot projects are ongoing including one coordinated by Elisabetta Giuffra with support from the SelGen INRA metaprogram (FR-AGEncode). Other supporting partners are the USDA through a NRSP-8 Genome Project (in cattle, poultry and swine) and the National Pork Board through a project coordinated by the University of California-Davis on Swine functional genomics with bovine and poultry components.

The FAANG project was officially kicked off during the PAG meeting (NRSP-8 workshop) in San Diego in January 2015
