ONAB

A new web site for the National Observatory of Bovine Abnormalities

The National Observatory for Bovine Abnormalities (ONAB) aims at encouraging the detection and characterisation of genetic abnormalities in the French bovine population. This is one of the most critical steps in the control and eradication of these abnormalities which are inevitable.

The National Observatory for Bovine Abnormalities includes INRA, the Institut de l’Elevage (French Breeding Institute), Veterinary Technical Groups, the Veterinary Schools of Nantes, Toulouse and Alfort, UNCEIA (French National Union of Cooperatives for Animal Insemination) and its member companies, Races de France (Umbrella organization for breed societies) and Breed Selection and Testing organisations. It is coordinated by Amandine Duchesne (INRA) and Coralie Danchin (Institut de l’Elevage), in partnership with Françoise Dion (veterinarian, Races de France).

The ONAB site (www.onab.fr) was just recently updated and completed. This French web site presents the structure of the ONAB, its objectives, recent key figures, how abnormalities are detected, characterised and eradicated along with different examples of analyses or eradications that are currently underway. A form for declaring abnormalities is also provided.
