The European Partnership for Animal Health and Welfare

Animal health and welfare: a new European research partnership targets unprecedented societal, economic and political impact

The European Partnership for Animal Health and Welfare (EUPAHW) is by far the most ambitious research and innovation initiative funded by the European Commission to control infectious animal diseases and promote animal welfare.

Launched in January 2024 and coordinated by Ghent University (BL), it aims to develop multidisciplinary collaborations between stakeholders in animal health and welfare, through a “One Health” and “One Welfare” approach, to produce a societal impact.

Based on a strategic research and innovation agenda drawn up earlier, this partnership focuses on infectious diseases, zoonosis risks, and the assessment and improvement of animal welfare. It concerns all livestock, both terrestrial and aquatic. Its work is aimed at the sparing use of antimicrobials and a high level of animal welfare at all stages of the animal's life.

  • 90 partners, including 56 research organizations, 30 funding bodies, EFSA and EMA
  • Budget: 360 million Euros over 7 years, 50% from the Horizon Europe research-innovation program / 50% from project partners
  • 24 countries: 19 from the European Union and 5 associated with the Horizon Europe program
  • A first series of 17 internal projects involving only EUP AH&W partners was launched in 2024.
  • A first call for external projects will be launched during 2024, aimed at research and development organizations that are not members of the partnership.

INRAE is one of EUPAHW's main partners, with 21 units from its Animal Physiology and Breeding Systems (Phase), Animal Genetics (GA), Food Chain Microbiology (Mica) and Animal Health (SA) departments, and an anticipated overall budget of over €7 million.

EUPAHW objectives are aligned with the European Green Pact and the farm-to-fork strategy for fair, healthy food systems that respect people, animals and the environment.
