Omega-Truite

Omega-Truite: an FEAMP Project

Selection to improve n-3 polyunsaturated long-chain fatty acid content by Raman spectroscopy in rainbow trout

The main objective of the project is to evaluate the feasibility of genetic selection to improve the capacity to synthesize AGLPI n-3 in a major French aquaculture species, the rainbow trout. The final objective is to develop fish lines that use fewer natural fish resources but which are favorable to the improvement of consumer health by naturally increasing essential fatty acid content.

To do this:

A non-lethal method for the prediction of AGLPI n-3 content validated by Raman spectoscopy for measurements that are rapid, without solvant and low in cost.

  • This method will be used to estimate heritability of different AGLPI contents and their genetic correlations between AGLPI or with production traits and carcass cutting on colaterals from a trout line obtained through commercial selection. These production and cutting characteristics have already been selected and their genetic correlations will give information on whether they evolve if we introduce omega3 content into the selection schemes.
  • The genetic architecture of different fatty acid contents will be studied (GWAS) in order to identify the zones of the genome (QTL) implicated in these performances.
  • From the preceeding results, the interest of and the feasability of introducing genomic selection into these traits will be studied.
