GenTORE : GENomic management Tools to Optimize Resilience and Efficiency.

The objective of GenTORE is to develop innovative tools for genomic selection and management in order to optimize the resilience and efficacy of cattle in different environments. These tools, including genetic and non-genetic variables, will be applied throughout the all chains of bovine production systems (dairy, beef and mixed). They will increase the economic, environmental and social viability of European production chains of dairy and beaf cattle.

The GenTORE project includes several elements: i) A multidisciplinary scientific expertise in genomics, environmental analysis, nutritional physiology, health management, precision farming, mathematic and social-economic modeling. ii) Partners and participants representing breeding organizations, agriculture technology companies,  agricultural and veterinary consulting services and agricultural sectors (biological, grazing, etc.). iii) A unique database including more than 1 million genotypes.

This multi-stakeholder team will develop tools for multi-breed selection for the resilience and efficacy of cattle; characterization of different agricultural environments; large-scale phenotyping of resilience and efficacy of cattle using on-site technology (on-farm); on-site management (on-farm) of decisions concerning breeding and slaughtering; anticipating the consequences for an agricultural resilience challenged by breeding changes and its management. These tools will be commercialized at the end of the project. They will allow increased use of genomic diversity in bovine breeds. For example, the use of selective cross-breeding for an improved use of local production environments. They will also allow farm managers, their advisors and policy makers to measure the relative importance of breeding for resilient animals or for production in terms of system resilience. Thus the GenTORE project not only favors the use of genomic information to facilitate predictive biology of traits associated with efficacy and resilience but it will also increase the resilience of animal production faced with today's and future challenges such as climate change and food security.
