HYPOTEMP

HYPOTEMP: an FEAMP Project

Selection of robust rainbow trout resistant to variations of environmental conditions (hypoxia and temperature).

The Hypotemp project coordinated by Mathilde Dupont-Nivet, Senior Research Scientist at INRAE (GABI) is financed by the European Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Fund as part of the "Fishing and Aquaculture Innovation" programme.

The general objective of the HypoTemp projet is to study genetic determinism and the possibilities of selection for the resistance to hypoxia and temperature in the rainbow trout. Indeed, due to their poikilothermia and water breathing, fish are particularly sensitive to variations in water quality. Due to their physiology, both oxygen content and temperature in water are two parameters of water quality to which rainbow trout are particularly sensitive, which make them the main indicators of first-category rivers. The rainbow trout is also an important aquaculture species and that in farming conditions, must face varying water qualities. The present project will study on the one hand the feasability of selection for hypoxia resistance or temperature in commercial populations of three French-bred lines and on the other hand the underlying mechanisms of resistance to acute temperature stress.
